By now, everybody familiar with Cookies & Gold Stars’ coverage of the World Rally Championship should know (or, have noticed) that we try to incorporate music into our previews and wrap-ups (which, given, we have not produced many of since 2012, but stick with our trials and errors while we muddle our way back). Preferably regionally applicable, but (often) running with emotional encapsulation (as well). Just to be clear, as (quite vividly) stated here, there, and everywhere, as much as we love it and cherish the readership we have gained from that audience (we love you, our loves), we are not a WRC-exclusive site. And, music is a big part of our existence. As is Formula 1 racing. So, with WRC teams squeezing ADAC Rallye Deutschland (21-24 August) testing into their summer breaks and this weekend’s F1 German Grand Prix (18-20 July) in the air, we thought, hey, what better time to do a little pre-event testing of our own? Any excuse to celebrate the full spectrum of mastery and silliness that is the musical history of Germany, we say!
Here are a few of our favorites, (both) past and present. Also, we have found that flipping through photos of Rally Germanys past while playing these songs (what do you do in your spare time?) works disturbingly well. Germanic perfectly well, in fact. Enjoy!
And, of course, it would not be a proper celebration of German music culture without remembering when (American, adopted by Germany) David Hasselhoff (personally) reunited the nation, bringing East and West Germany together like the black and white keys of his piano scarf, crumbling the Berlin Wall in his 1980s rock fists, and illuminating hope with his jacket.
