MOTORSPORT /// WRC /// WRC WEDNESDAY /// OH, CLOSE ENOUGH: EVEN WITHOUT THE TITLE, OGIER’S MOM (STILL) LOVES INGRASSIA, AUSTRALIA 2013 /// 3.9.2014…

Volkswagen Motorsport’s Sébastien Ogier (FRA) and (co-driver) Julien Ingrassia (FRA) could have taken the 2013 Drivers’ and Co-Drivers’ Championships at Coates Hire Rally Australia.  But, a mysterious puncture in the final stage caused Citroën Total Abu Dhabi World Rally Team’s Mikko Hirvonen (FIN) and (co-driver) Jarmo Lehtinen (FIN) to drop to third, advancing Qatar WRT’s Thierry Neuville (BEL) and (co-driver) Nicolas Gilsoul (BEL) to second, closing the Championship gap and extending the race one more rally.  But, with (only) one point needed to clinch those titles, a point which could be collected with a top three Power Stage finish in the first stage of Rallye de France-Alsace, making it a bit of a formality at this point, there was much excitement to be shared (appropriately bringing the VW Rally the World slogan, “Excitement We Share”, to life so far from their European base).  And, just in case Australia turned out to be the perfect mix of results they were hoping for, Ogier’s family was ready to celebrate the near perfection that it turned out to be at the finish line.  Because, while they may not have had the titles, Ogier’s proud mom (still) loved both of them.
