Jari-Matti Latvala cannot catch a break this year.  Unless, of course, that break involves tumbling down a hill on a routine cross-country ski excursion, rolling the Nordic right out of Nordic skiing, and breaking his left collarbone in the process.  From the strange decision to reinvent parking at Monte-Carlo to rolling out of the way of (perceived) danger at Mexico to his rumble with a rogue rock at Portugal to his tangle with a fence at New Zealand, it seems the Finn has taken being stuck in a rut to a whole new level.  And, unfortunately, it seems that Murphy’s Law has (now) taken control of his historic rally hobby as well.

Days after taking third at Neste Oil Rally Finland (or, as a Finn in third may be referred to in Finland as, “losing” and “taking a place on the pedestal of shame”) and just weeks after he and (historic rally co-driver) Asko Sairanen (FIN) had swept all ten stages of the Rally Estonia historic class with their Latvala Motorsport Ford Escort RS, Latvala was riding on a much-needed high.  Historic rallies are a known favourite downtime activity of the Finn and, it would seem, a good way to get back to basics, squeeze in a little practice without any pressure, and (truly) have fun.  From an external point of view, these historic rallies are exactly what Latvala has needed to boost his confidence and (more importantly) remind him why he became a professional rally driver in the first place.  These events are Latvala at his best: accepting full responsibility for his actions, taking charge and addressing problems head-on, and showing pride in his hard work.  He is relaxed, he is scrappy, and he is pushing out of a pure love of the fight.  This is the real Jari-Matti Latvala.  He is one hell of a rally driver.  And, it was time to show the 2012 Lahti Historic Rally what he is (really) made of.

The Lahti Historic Rally bid started with a bang of one sort and ended with a bang of a very different sort for Latvala and Sairanen.  Riding his wave of recent successes and propelled by his enthusiasm for taking part, Latvala was able to hold onto a strong lead as the first day came to a close.  However, this lead was not earned without a battle.  During Stage 4, Latvala reported that he had lost third gear.  By the end of the day, second had run away (as well), leaving him to fight on with only first, fourth and fifth and leaving the world with one of the more (genuinely) impressive onboard videos ever tossed out into the universe.  Out were the impossibly smooth gear changes of a professional driver and in were the thoughtfully mapped gear changes of a knowledgable, experienced racer.

An awkward situation, to say the least.  And, sadly, it would prove to be the least of the problems Latvala and Sairanen would experience by the end of the event.  An end they would never get to see.

After that first day, Latvala sat down to answer some questions (submitted by fans).  Through the video, it is more than clear that the Finn was run down.  Not only had he just been through a long, challenging day, it was revealed that he was a bit under the weather.  Not that it had to be verbalized, as it was made quite obvious by his vacant look, uncharacteristic quiet (relative, of course), and telltale unfocused eyes.  But, it was nice he was able to follow through with his commitment to his fans without throwing up on camera.

Unfortunately, gearbox issues and feeling under the weather and worn down were mere flies to be swatted away compared to what the duo would face on the second (final) day.  In spite of all the problems, Latvala was able to hold onto a significant lead (heading into Day 2).  However, the largest lead known to man could not have kept the Escort in the race after a less than dramatic, though undeniably horrifying, turn for the absolute worst stopped Latvala and Sairanen in their tracks in the midst of Stage 7.  Some delusional people in the world like to believe that adding flame decals to a vehicle will make it appear faster.  But, here is the thing about cars and flames: rather than magically add speed, the flames tend to halt the cars quite quickly.  Because oxygen fuels fire.  Faster vehicle, faster air speed, faster burn, faster destruction of more parts.  If you refuse to believe us, delusional flame decal rockers, why don’t you ask Jari-Matti Latvala?  Yes, Latvala’s bid for historic rally glory for the second time in a month came to a fiery end when the Ford Escort RS was halted in Stage 7 when flames appeared from under the bonnet.  In a tragic, though not so shocking (given how the universe has been toying with Latvala all year), twist, the hideous drama did not end with pulling over to put out the fire.  No.  Because, that would be too easy on the guy.  When Latvala went to extinguish the flames, he pointed, aimed, and…nothing.  Adding insult to injury, Latvala experienced a common problem faced by many who have tried to use a fire extinguisher to put out a fire: a less-than-user friendly trigger lock which tends to prevent the extinguisher from promptly extinguishing when most needed.  And, if you thought that was the end of the ordeal, it most certainly was not.  Between rounds of getting hosed by the gravel of passing competitors, after fighting with the extinguisher with no luck, Latvala went with the most logical strategy for those in an illogical and frustrated state.  He smacked the car with the extinguisher.

Did we not say that the Lahti Historic Rally started with one bang and ended with a bang of a very different sort?

At the end of the day, Latvala and Sairanen were not only able to come away from a car fire, unharmed, they were able to limit the damage to the car to very centralized parts of the engine.  And, at the end of the rally, 2011 winners Veli-Matti Saarelainen (FIN), (co-driver) Marko Tikkanen (FIN), and their Opel Ascona 400 inherited the lead and were able to maintain their stronghold on Lahti Historic.  Though Latvala may have experienced another round of disaster and another rally retirement for the 2012 record, he did not go down without a fight.  He forged ahead on his own terms and fought because he wanted to, because he likes to.  So, should Latvala ever appear in another World Rally Championship video record of near-tears devastation, just remember that there is a fighter in there.  And, he is far scrappier than he seems to get credit for.

Latvala will bounce back.  (Hopefully) with more historic rally news along the way.
